Metro police are investigating an assault in a Des Moines liquor store.

The incident happened around 5:30 Friday night at the University Grocery Store in the 2100 block of University.

Police say a customer became angry when an employee wouldn’t accept a return for an open package of cigarettes.

The store's surveillance video shows how the customer then got angry.

When asked to leave the store, the suspect grabbed a shovel and hit the clerk on the head several times.

The victim only suffered a few cuts and bruises.

Another store employee was able to get the suspect's license plate number. Police have yet to announce an arrest.
