Girls’ sports lost an icon Saturday.
E. Wayne Cooley, the former Executive Secretary of the Iowa Girls Athletic Union died at the age of 90.
Cooley was a pioneer for girls’ sports working with the union for almost 50 years.
In an accomplished career, his resume has some notable achievements.
Cooley developed the state 6-player girl’s basketball tournament which drew national attention. He is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and established the nation’s first high school softball tournament in 1955.
