More than 150 veterans from Jasper County are spending Tuesday in Washington, D.C. to tour the memorials dedicated in their honor.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the memorials, I’ve been there once to D.C. when I was in the military back in the 50’s, but I’m sure there’s been a lot of improvements made to the memorials that were there and others have been built,” says Navy veteran Gordon Anderson.

The Freedom Flight took off around 5:30 Tuesday morning from the Des Moines International Airport. Veterans from all over Jasper County representing World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War arrived in coach buses.

They got quite a send-off, with people clapping and waving flags inside of the airport.

They’re expected to return Tuesday night at 10:30.
