Despite the cooler temperatures in the forecast for Memorial Day weekend, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reminding boaters to remain cautious on Iowa lakes and rivers.

Boaters are encouraged to review boating laws and keep an eye out for others on the water.

“We may see fewer boaters out with the cool forecast, but it will still be plenty busy on the water,” says Susan Stocker, boating law and education coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Stocker insists that boaters should not drink alcohol if they intend to drive a boat and ensure that life jackets are in good condition and the correct size for all people on board.  Boaters should also check the fire extinguisher, boat and trailer lights, whistle, and throwable floatation.
