Investigators say a woman who drove her SUV off of I-235 and onto 22nd Street in West Des Moines was drunk at the time of the crash.
An incident report shows that a preliminary breath test taken by 29-year-old Cassandra Beverly of Waukee resulted in a blood alcohol content of .129. Iowa’s legal limit for BAC is .08.
The accident happened just before 2:00 a.m. Thursday. Police say Beverly was headed westbound on I-235 when she lost control and hit a guardrail, then her vehicle went airborne and dropped about 15 feet, rolling several times and coming to rest on a concrete barrier in the northbound lanes of 22nd Street.
Beverly had to be cut out of the vehicle. West Des Moines Police spoke with her while she was being transported to Methodist Medical Center. Police say she admitted to drinking whiskey at Court Avenue before the crash.
The incident report shows doctors told police she suffered from a fractured neck and a collapsed lung. Her current condition is unavailable.
Police say they will wait until they can conduct further interviews before an official OWI charge will be filed. A citation for failure to maintain control will also be issued at that time.
About $5,000 in damage was done to the guardrail on I-235 in the accident.
