The Des Moines Arts Festival takes over Western Gateway Park in 36 days. Volunteers are still needed to make the annual event possible. The event runs June 28th, 29th and 30th.
Volunteer Lora Fraracci says, “It’s amazing. It’s great. It’s a great arts festival. I’ve been to several around the country, and it’s definitely one of the best.”
Fraracci will be at the festival to enjoy the atmosphere. She says, “We breathe air, so we must have art.”
She’ll also help. She says, “It’s super fun. You get to meet a lot of people, whether they’re here in Des Moines, residents of Des Moines or who come all of the country.”
Fraracci started volunteering twelve years ago. She’s taken on many roles from volunteering at the Arts Center booth to watching artists’ tents so they can take a break. This year, she’ll help raise money for her daughter’s school. She says, “Come get your beer and wine at Cowles Montessori beer tent.”
Des Moines Arts Festival organizers say they need about 1,200 volunteers for the three day event. And, they still have about 400 open slots. Maggie Pforts with the Des Moines Arts Festival says, “We definitely still need your help, now more than ever.”
Volunteers can choose from about twenty different jobs. Those include helping set up, working at the information and merchandise tents and keeping an eye on the sculpture park. She says, “We have about 200,000 people throughout the weekend at the festival, and volunteers help make that experience a great one for all of our guests as well as the artists and entertainers.”
It’s something Fraracci looks forward to every year. She says, “I’ve just had a great time doing it.”
