The Department of Natural Resources is warning Iowans affected by recent flooding of possible contamination issues.

The DNR says people should be cautious around flood waters for more than just the obvious drowning dangers.  With recent rain overwhelming many wastewater facilities untreated sewage had to be bypassed in order to avoid a backup of sewage into homes and businesses.

Residents in flooded areas should avoid contact with the water due to possible contamination, especially if they have open cuts.

Elevated levels of bacteria are often found in areas were the flood water has been trapped for some time like basements.
