Newton Mayor Mike Hansen said Tuesday local leaders would still pursue "other state incentives" after legislators turned down a $8 million incentives package for an expansion of the Iowa Speedway last week. Hansen wouldn't say what incentives that would entail.
Last week, Channel 13 news reported the Speedway sought the incentives to expand seating and marketing efforts to lure a Sprint Cup Series race to Newton. Local leaders cited a study that showed one race could bring an additional $50 million in revenues and a potential 100,000 fans.
NASCAR sent a letter to Channel 13 and Iowa Speedway officials reminding everyone that even if the Speedway expands, it doesn't mean NASCAR will award the track a Sprint Cup Series race. Read the full letter here.
