Rain is putting a damper on a big sporting event this week.

The annual Principal Charity Classic kicked off Wednesday, but play had to be called off a short time later due to heavy rain and lightning.

Golfers in the Pro-Am Series tee’d off on time, but were pulled from the course around 2:30 p.m. about an hour later officials postponed play for the day.

“It`s extreme, we played one hole today, so it was the best hole we had. We`ve gotten lucky the past six years, so this is a bit of a change,” Golfer Brian Lonergan laughed.

Some of the pros decided to hang around the club-house to make the most of the weather and hosted a question and answer session with fans.

The Pro-Am portion is expected to pick back up Thursday at 7 a.m., weather permitting.

Organizers may adjust tee boxes due to the wet conditions.
