After more than a year away, Senior Master Sergeant James Segebarth has returned to U.S. soil.

On Tuesday, the serviceman surprised his 10-year old son, Anthony, during a school assembly in Waterloo.

The two hadn’t seen each other in a year.

Anthony has lived with his grandparents in Waterloo while Segebarth served in Afghanistan.

As Anthony and his classmates began singing “America the Beautiful” at a school assembly, Segebarth walked in.

That’s when Anthony ran up to give him a hug.

The father-son duo said they planned to go fishing that afternoon.

“It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as we’re spending time together to be honest,” said Segebarth.

The two will join the rest of their family in Montana next week.
