JOHNSON COUNTY: Preparing For The Worst

Flooding in Johnson County is expected to get much worse into next week.

New forecasts show the Iowa River will top the Coralville Reservoir’s emergency spillway by Tuesday.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has already increased the outflow at the reservoir and they say they plan to increase it further Friday.

If the water does top the spillway, the amount of water flowing through Iowa City will dramatically increase. The Sheriff’s Department is already going door-to-door warning residents of low-lying areas that they should be ready to evacuate.

The emergency spillway was topped during the devastating floods of 1993 and 2008.

The University of Iowa knows how damaging the flood waters were in 2008 so officials say they aren’t taking any chances this time around.

Earlier this week, they evacuated Mayflower Residence Hall and crews will finish installing HESCO barriers by Friday.  They have also started sandbagging around the Memorial Union.
