MURPHY’S LAW: Cyclones Welcome Transfers, Kane Is Able*, Bielema Schools Gee

Pray for Oklahoma. How much can these people take? If I had options, I’m not sure I could continue living in Oklahoma’s tornado alley. It’s just too much…

The severe weather here in Iowa finally took a needed day off. Should be a nice weekend for the Principal Charity Classic. Props to all involved. It’s a terrific community event…

Fred Hoiberg turned Iowa State basketball around, in part, by welcoming transfers. Many of whom needed a fresh start, or second chance, somewhere else. Going into season four, it’s clear Hoiberg wants to keep a good thing going. NCAA basketball has become a transfer culture, and Iowa State has a reputation as a good landing spot. Hoiberg seems a calming influence. Just ask Royce White. Or the Rockets…

Most of us don’t like the transfer culture, but the fans who hate it, probably follow teams who aren’t benefiting. As new assistant Doc Sadler told me Thursday, the coaches who complain about the one-and-dones, would take one in a minute…

DeAndre Kane transfers from Marshall to ISU on the Russell Wilson graduation loophole. Kane can play right away. And Kane can play. He’s a big point guard who can score, pass, and rebound. He makes it much more likely Iowa State reaches a third straight NCAA tournament. Kane is 23 years old, and growing up. He needed that. As Randy Peterson of the Register notes, Kane received one technical foul last year, after 14 the previous two. 14! Dennis Rodman thinks that a lot…

LeBron James plays a game Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh can’t reach. Game 5 showed why James currently has no peer…

If you love Ohio State, you probably get a kick out of President Gordon Gee’s putdowns. If you’re anyone else, you wonder how a man that smart can suffer from a such a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease. He doesn’t need to lose his job. He does need to think before he talks. In the meantime, former Hawkeye, current Arkansas coach Bret Bielema delivers this Twitter gut punch to Gee:

What a difference a breakout post-season makes. Hundreds of fans lined up at Hy-Vee to meet Harrison Barnes. The line stretched around the store, and that’s a big store. Barnes says he remembers what it was like when he was a kid and met Fred Hoiberg. I’m sure this kid will remember the day he met Barnes:

It’s always smart to get a picture. I collected autographs when I was a kid. I’ve lost track of most of the autographs, and wish I had a photo. I practiced what I’d say to Johnny Bench for a week, but when the moment came, I froze. I couldn’t speak. At least I got the signature. No photo though…

Yahoo’s Jeff Eisenberg reports a women’s golfer at an unnamed school had to pay $20 back to her school because she washed her car on campus. The water and hose were not available to all students. This is the height of the NCAA’s ridiculous rules and hypocrisy. Meantime, the NCAA pretends obvious one-and-dones are “student-athletes”…

Rutgers paid a search committee $70,000 to find out less on Julie Hermann than a reporter found in one day. And as my friend Ryan said, Google is free…

I hadn’t heard of Dioner Navarro before he hit three home runs for the Cubs Wednesday. Not proud of that, but it’s true…

Casey Blake told me the best hitter he’s ever seen is… Manny Ramirez. Manny was–is–a flake, but dude could rake…

Several movie critics say Will Smith’s “After Earth” is one of the worst movies ever made. Like “Battlefield Earth” bad. Smith used to be Mr. Summer. Have you seen this? Is it really that bad?…

Going to see the Barnstormers Saturday night. I may need to bring a radio. When the Stormers score, Jim Brinson has promised to go Tim McGraw: “TOUCHDOWN… BARNSTORMERS! I LIKE IT. I LOVE IT. I WANT SOME MORE OF IT.” There’s only one Jimmy B…

*Yes, that’s an homage to The Program…
