Senator Chuck Grassley positions himself in favor of smaller farmers, and has backed that position by opposing consolidation and monopoly on many occasions during his Senate tenure.

His initial reaction to the Smithfield Foods' takeover seems to fall on both sides. In a conference call Tuesday Grassley reiterated the negative aspects of vertical integration on individual producers, but agreed that the deal's potential to increase pork exports to China is good for agriculture.

Grassley has sent a letter to the Justice Department asking for a review of the merger, and whether it is anti-competitive and threatens U.S. security.
