It took a Fort Dodge jury just two hours to decide the fate of an Early man accused of killing his mother and kidnapping another woman.
The jury found 21-year-old Kirk Levin guilty of first degree murder and third degree kidnapping.
Over the course of the 4-day trial prosecutors detailed how they believe Levin stabbed and choked his mother, Marilyn Schmitt to death at her home in January. Then they say Levin proceeded to kidnap Jessica Vega after luring her from her home to his mother’s house. Vega was later able to escape.
Levin’s defense argued that he wasn’t in the right state of mind during the January events. They say the state did not prove that he premeditated the murder of his mother.
Levin faces a sentence of life in prison when he’s sentenced at a later date.
