GAS TAX: Gov. Changes His Mind

Generic Terry Branstad

Governor Branstad has switched gears on his plan to increase the gas tax.

He says even though infrastructure improvements need to be made raising the gas tax is not the way to go about paying for them at this time.

“It appears that it’s going to be a continued diminishing resource, the gas tax, and I think because of the high cost of gasoline and diesel fuel the public is strongly opposed to it and I think it puts a lot of people who have to commute to work in a very difficult situation if they’re having to pay more gas tax,” Branstad said.

The Governor plans to ask the state’s transportation director to look into other options to fund infrastructure improvements.

Iowa’s gas tax is now 22 cents per gallon. It hasn’t been raised since 1989.
