MISS IOWA: Gaining National Attention
The new Miss Iowa has only had her crown for a few days, but she’s already grabbing national attention.
Last weekend Nicole Kelly was crowned Miss Iowa 2013, the Keokuk native was born without a left forearm. She says the Miss Iowa Crown is giving her a voice to promote her platform of overcoming disabilities.
Nicole says it’s her job to help people see that those with disabilities are no different.
“Live life like you live and others will become comfortable with you and know that you are no different… That is what I want to bring to the Miss America stage, is the fact that it is every fiber of who I am, but at the same time no part of who I am,” Nicole told our sister station WQAD.
She attends the University of Nebraska where she majors in directing and theater management.
Nicole says she spent a lot of time at Shriner’s Hospitals while growing up. She plans to visit hospitals around the state as Miss Iowa.
She’ll compete in the Miss America Pageant on September 15th in Atlantic City.
