Iowa City police say a suspicious package found in downtown Sunday was not a bomb.

Police are still investigating, but they say at no time was the safety of the public jeopardized.

Sunday evening around 6:00, police blocked off several areas of downtown, and called in the Johnson County Metro Bomb Squad.

Police say the suspicious package was found on East Washington Ave in a mailbox.

The package was detonated a couple hours later with a water cannon.
