Paddlers heading to the South Raccoon River in Dallas County will face a mild inconvenience for the next two weeks.

The Pleasant Valley Access to the river will be closed while the parking area is renovated. Paddlers can look forward to a new parking area with 10 stalls including two ADA stalls, a loop and staging area for trailers. Additionally, the old access road will become a wetland area with new plantings.

“While the project may not be fully complete, we anticipate the new parking area to be usable by the July 4th holiday weekend,” said Todd Robertson, outreach coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Rivers Program.

The new access and parking lot will be located at the end of Indian Trail, blocking off the old access road to help curb illegal dumping, target shooting and unauthorized motor vehicle use.
