FEATHERED FRIENDS: Young Falcons Banded

Since 1993, the American Enterprise building on 6th Avenue in downtown Des Moines has welcomed nesting falcons.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reached a milestone this year.

Wednesday morning, three young Peregrine falcons hatched on the third level of the building underwent a quick physical. Each had blood drawn and eyes checked to ensure healthiness before release. The DNR says this is necessary to keep Iowa’s falcon population growing and to educate the youth.

“The work goes on so that people understand that if we become complacent or taken for granted or start using chemicals that affect them negatively, ultimately that affects us,” Pat Schlarbaum, Wildlife Diversity Technician, said.

The three falcons banded today bring the total number of falcons hatched from this nest to 53.
