A second person has died following a head-on crash on I-80 earlier this month.

The Iowa State Patrol says 20-year-old Jessie Leeper and two friends were heading westbound on I-80 near the Earlham exit on June 9th when a vehicle heading the wrong way struck them. The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Megan Wakeham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leeper was transferred to an Iowa City hospital in critical condition, but the Adair Fire Department says he died from his injuries Wednesday morning. Leeper’s passengers, TJ Claussen and his younger sister, only received minor injuries.

A benefit for the Claussen and Leeper families is being held at the Adair-Casey High School, August 4th, at 11:00 a.m.

The Iowa State Patrol is still waiting on toxicology reports to determine whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
