We've heard for months how great it is Des Moines is hosting the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Thursday night,  we got to see why. As did a strong crowd at Drake Stadium for a Thursday night.

In the men’s 100 meters first round, the man who just beat Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin cruised to the finish line.

He finished second in 10.37, top 4 in each heat advanced.

Another 100 meter heat, the American record holder Tyson Gay was first to the finish in 10.28.

Gay and Gatlin both say they felt good as they advance easily.

Sanya Richards-Ross jokingly called her reality show, The Black Kardashians, she's married to NFL player Aaron Ross. And oh yeah, she's a four time Olympic gold medalist.

Richards-Ross is a crowd favorite, and she's earned it.

In the first round of the 400 meter dash, Richards-Ross left plenty in the tank, and still wins her heat easily. She cruises in 51.4 seconds.

Fort Dodge's Lisa Uhl did not win a state championship on the Blue Oval. But back then she was Lisa Koll. Through hard work, Lisa won NCAA titles at Iowa State, and is now an Olympian.

Here in Iowa, we love local connections, and there's no shortage this weekend.

Men's 800, Orange City native Tyler Mulder coasted in a 1:48. Mulder won his heat. Former Hawkeye Eric Sowinski also moved on.

Women’s 800 saw Kate Grace finish 4th, while Alysia Montano won the event with a time of two minutes and one second.
