Veterans and military spouses are getting help finding a new job Thursday.

Organizers in Newton are holding a job fair for veterans and members of the armed forces. It’s an off-shoot of the nationwide “Hiring Our Heroes” job fairs.

Budget cuts almost led to the cancellation of the Newton job fair, but thanks to the Jasper County Economic Development group and the county’s Veterans coordinator the event was able to remain on the calendar.

“We know there are job fairs that happen around county once and a while and around the state of Iowa, we thought since this was already started we would just go ahead and finish it and see where it goes. This is our first one so we’ll see how it works,” says Newton mayor Chaz Allen.

The job fair goes until 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion on Fourth Street in Newton. Seventeen employers are expected to attend.
