Des Moines public schools are about to get a big boost in a tutoring help for students.

The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service voted to award $6 million in AmeriCorps state grants to support the placement of more than 650 AmeriCorps members across the state.

About $900,000 of that was awarded to the Des Moines Public School District.

With this grant award, 68 AmeriCorps members will be placed in 49 schools across the district to increase academic performance and student engagement through math and literacy tutoring in elementary schools, career-focused mentoring in middle school, service-learning opportunities in international baccalaureate schools, and volunteer programs.
