In keeping with Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative, Gov. Terry Branstad presented the Million Dollar Marathon Monday morning at the Statehouse.

The marathon is an initiative by Above and Beyond Cancer. It’s a 4,000 mile run from Ocean Shores Beach in Washington to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware.

The running team is composed of 160 cancer survivors and caregivers. The team represents 24 states and 14 different types of cancer.

The goal of the project is to raise $1 million for cancer research and programs that support cancer survivors and their families.

Dr. Richard Deming leads Above and Beyond Cancer. He says living a healthy lifestyle is key in cancer prevention.

“One-third of all cancers in the United States is caused by inactivity and obesity, so we are part of a process to educate individuals about the need of healthy lifestyles in order to prevent cancer,” says Dr. Deming.

Dr. Deming was the first runner as the Million Dollar Marathon kicked off June 21st in Washington state.
