Guards have uncovered several unusual items at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison.

During a routine search around 12:30 p.m. Monday , guards located two ropes in an attic area of the prison.

The ropes were made with braided bed sheets.  One was 17-feet long, the other 10-feet.

Police also located gloves, sand paper and two bottles of an unknown liquid.

The liquid is being tested to determine what it is and the prison has been placed on restricted status.

A pair of inmates escaped from the prison in November of 2005.

During that escape the prisoners used a homemade grappling hook and rope made out of upholstery materials to scale the prison’s walls.

Both men were eventually captured.
