EQUAL RIGHTS: Advocates Celebrate Ruling
Many Iowans converged Wednesday evening across the state to celebrate the long-anticipated US Supreme Court ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act.
“Today is a great day to celebrate and to come together and recognize this is our history, this is happening as we go through these stages of the civil rights movement,” Iowa senator, Matt McCoy said.
One Iowa organized several rallies, including the one at the Iowa State Capitol, to celebrate equal rights for all couples.
The ruling means the federal government has to recognize married same-sex couples in the twelve state, including Iowa, where it’s been legalized.
The act had defined marriage as only between a man and a woman, but the court said the law violated the rights of same-sex couples by demoting their marriages to second-class status.
The Supreme Court voted in favor by 5-4.
