Des Moines police have one man in custody following a short standoff on the city’s south side Wednesday.

Police say it started a little before noon at 6204 South Union when an animal control officer came to the address to seize a dog that had allegedly bit a little girl Tuesday. When the officer walked up to the house, 35-year-old Brian Case chased the officer away while wielding a machete, then locked himself inside the house.

Police say Case refused to communicate with them but they were able to take him into custody peacefully about an hour later when his girlfriend and mom showed up with keys to the home.

Case is charged with going armed with intent, dog at large, and no city license.

Animal control officers were able to remove the dog from the home.
