Thursday is National HIV Testing Day, a day when people are encouraged to get tested to verify their status.

More than one million people are living with HIV in the United States, yet one in five does not know they’re positive.

The sooner people learn that they are HIV positive, the sooner they can get treatment that can weaken the virus.

You can get tested at the Polk County Health Department at a low cost. That’s located at 1907 Carpenter Avenue in Des Moines.

Every day, HIV rapid tests are available for anyone living in Polk County for $5. Anyone living outside of Polk County will pay $20. Results are back within 20 minutes.

Walk in appointments are being taken Thursday until 4:00 p.m.
