ARTS FESTIVAL: Small Band With A Big Performance

Posted on: 7:02 pm, June 28, 2013, by

Paintings, sculptures, and interactive art, you can find it all at the Des Moines Arts Festival. In addition to striking sights, the festival also features some impressive sounds, but it might surprise you to see who’s playing it.

Eight-year-old Wyatt Ledinsky has been playing the drums since he was three-years-old. Ledinsky says, “I practice it at home and I practice listening to it and drumming to it so I know which beat is coming up next.”

And this weekend Wyatt and his band get to show off their art at the Des Moines Arts Festival Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on the main stage. Everyone agrees it takes a lot of guts for these kids to get up on stage. Ledinsky says, “You need to have courage, yeah, to get up in front of people.”

Playing for people is one of the highlights, but founder of the Central Iowa Music Lab James Biehn says his main focus is getting his students excited about music and teaching them how to bring a band together. Biehn says, “It`s not impossible to just get into a room with friends and just do it.”

After that, Biehn says anything is possible. Biehn says, “And who knows where that will take them maybe they will be a classical piano player or they`ll be a jazz drummer.”

Ledinsky says, “I want to be a famous drummer.”

They might be small in stature, but they have big talent, and a future full of their brand of art.
