OVERNIGHT SHOOTING: Witness Holds Victim In Arms

Just after midnight, partygoers found 16 – year – old, Tony Matthews, laying in yard. It happened at on the 1700 block of Mondamin Avenue in Des Moines.

Ikeisha Carter said it was supposed to be a small summer get- together at her house with only a dozen people but it quickly spun out of control.

After she heard the gunshots she ran towards Matthews. She held him in her arms until helped arrived.

Carter says she kept telling the victim he was going to be okay. “We`ll get you to the hospital as soon as we can. We love you, you can’t leave us now.”

The victim was shot in the abdomen and chest.

Police say they recovered some pieces of evidence but still don't know who pulled the trigger.

Sergeant Steve Woody says, “Detectives interviewed numerous witnesses who were in the area last night and crime scene personal worked throughout the night to process the scene.”

Carter was one of those questioned by police, she told them she just wanted to help.

“Police asked me why I ran towards the gun shots, I don`t know. I really don`t know why I ran towards him. I just wanted to help him out though.”

Matthews was taken to a local hospital and underwent surgery. He is listed in critical condition.
