Investigators still don’t know if a smoke detector was working in the apartment where a child died last week.

Seven-year old Jaileigh Posey was killed in the fire in independence last Friday.

Investigators say they’ve recovered a chunk of melted plastic they believe is a smoke detector from the scene of the fire.

They are working to see if it was operational before the fire.

The State Fire Marshal Office reports 86 percent of fire fatalities in Iowa over the past five years have correlated with not having adequate working smoke alarms.

“It’s very rare that we find fatalities with smoke alarms,” State Fire Marshal Director Ray Reynolds told sister station, KWWL.

Funeral services are still being planned for Jaileigh.
