MURPHY’S LAW: Stevens not Hoiberg, Rubbin’s Racin’, Block Party

The Celtics hire Butler’s Brad Stevens. Did not see that one coming. Stevens can flat-out coach. The fact he took Butler to back-to-back national title games is somehow underrated. Think about that. Butler…

Stevens can coach, but that does not mean he’ll succeed in the NBA. Often times the players at that level just don’t listen, or won’t show respect. It’s even harder when you’re not an ex-player, and you don’t have any rings. Stevens looks younger than some guys still on the court. See photo below…

He looks like a guy who recently tried to sell me an extended warranty at Best Buy…

There’s talk of what a big risk Stevens is taking. Leaving a $30,000 a year job to open your own bakery is a risk. Leaving a multi-million dollar a year job for another multi-million dollar a  year job, which if he fails, leads to any number of multi-million dollar a year job offers, is not “risky”…

I like the hire. Better than recycling another old coach like Larry Brown. The fact the Celtics hired Stevens adds credibility to reports Boston had interest in Fred Hoiberg. Hiring Hoiberg actually would have surprised most people less than Stevens. Hoiberg has NBA experience, he’s successful at Iowa State (though nothing like Stevens at Butler), and most importantly, Hoiberg has shown he can get the most out of talented players who gave other coaches problems. I’ll still be stunned if Fred goes anywhere while he still has kids in school. Anything’s possible–ask Butler fans–but I don’t see it happening…

Butler is now in a tough spot. I wonder if the university shows interest in Todd Lickliter. When he left Butler, it ended up even better for the Bulldogs (Stevens), but badly for Iowa and Lickliter, with the notable exception of Todd’s bank account. Lickliter is a good coach in the right fit. That wasn’t Iowa, but was Butler…

Dwight Howard loves attention, and loves being wooed, but how can it not make you sick seeing these teams suck up to him. He’s the rare big man with jaw-dropping basketball talent, but he hasn’t proven he’s a team guy, or a winner. Hard to imagine Erving or Bird wanted teams making fools of themselves like this. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…

31 new United States citizens took the oath of allegiance at the I-Cubs game Wednesday night. It’s one of the coolest moments at Principal Park all season…

Kurt Busch will drive the Days of Thunder City Chevrolet Friday night. That’s just cool…

Cubs fans distaste for Carolos Marmol seems a little out of proportion. Yes, Marmol turned into a terrible closer, but it’s not like he’s accused of murder. Patriot fans know real disappointment, and wasted talent…

Count me among those who wants to see Yasiel Puig in the MLB All-Star game. It’s a glorified exhibition–foolish World Series home field advantage aside–and most fans want to see the Dodgers phenom. Andy Fales strongly disagrees…

Charlie Weis has figured out a way to keep Kansas fans from realizing he’s not winning: unveil new helmets…

Our Forestdale neighborhood throws an old-fashioned block party on the 4th. Other states wish they still threw parties like those in Iowa. Happy 4th!…
