This weekend, the Iowa state patrol and local departments are working overtime to keep roadways and drivers safe.

More officers have been dispatched for the holiday and the weekend.

Officers are on the lookout for seatbelt violations, speeders, and impaired or distracted drivers.  They’re also reminding drivers to be cautious in construction zones.

Troopers say their presence can help remind people to focus on the road.

“A lot of times people have the tendency to speed or do something maybe they shouldn’t be doing, following too close or that distraction,” says trooper Bob Conrad. “They see that trooper car, it reminds them, hey this is not my first responsibly.  That helps.”

Trooper Conrad says they are seeing more distracted drivers, like people looking at their phones, GPS or even the TV.
