Des Moines firefighters spent much of the July 4th evening fighting a fire at an abandoned building filled with construction debris.

The smoky fire started early Thursday evening at the former environmental reclamation & recycling building on Scott Avenue near SE 14th Court.

Firefighters had a tough time battling the fire because of what they described as “mountains of debris” inside.  They say the building is a huge fire hazard.

“It is time for this building to go.  It’s been sitting empty for a very long time with a lot of nasty stuff in there so hopefully someday it will be gone,” says district fire chief Joe Giudicessi.

Investigators have not determined a cause. But with no gas or electricity to the vacant building, they’re not ruling out arson.
