What was supposed to be a fun family outing turned into tragedy.

Authorities say 45-year old Wade Wiese of Charlotte died after losing control of his go-kart.

Wiese and his family were visiting Wisconsin when the incident occurred.

“The calls we usually get at the go-kart are relatively minor, and most of them don't even require an ambulance transport to a hospital,” says Lake Delton Sergeant Gerald Grimsled.

But this one needed a medical flight, "In 20 years, this is the most severe that I’ve ever been to."

The 45-year-old driver was racing with his brother on the Alligator Alley Adventures track.

Police say he took a turn and lost control. His kart hit the curb and flipped on its side.

The man's head slammed into one of the wooden posts lining the track.

"It does appear it was a freak accident," says Sgt. Grimsled.

Police do not believe the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Authorities plan to investigate whether the equipment was working properly.
