Former state senator Staci Appel has changed her mind and will run for congress in Iowa's 3rd Congressional District.

Appel, an Ackworth Democrat, told the Des Moines Register in April that she wouldn't run because of family obligations.  But she is now come out with a video announcing that she will be a candidate for the district.

The video includes a heavy emphasis on women and children with an Independent theme. The district slightly leans Republican but also includes a substantial amount of voters registered "no party".

Here are the July 1, 2013 numbers from the Iowa Secretary of State's office:

164,101--Registered Republicans

157,406--Registered Democrats

156,340--Registered Independents

Appel served in the senate for one-term before losing to Republican Kent Sorenson in 2010. Republican Tom Latham currently represents the 3rd District.
