Des Moines firefighters are getting a refresher course on responding to hazardous materials calls.
They suited up with the Iowa National Guard for a weapons of mass destruction training.
During the training, the HAZMAT team took samples for testing.
The Iowa law enforcement academy also participated in Wednesday’s exercise.
Firefighters say this type of training is important because they never know when they’ll have to put their skills to use.
“You’re a first responder, you’re going to be first on scene so you don’t want to roll up in your police car in hazardous materials scene and be part of the problem,” Captain of the Des Moines Fire Department Steve Brown said.
The Guard’s 71st Civil Support Team took part in the day’s refresher course.
