AGRIBUSINESS: Administration Opposes New FARM Act

The Administration is strongly opposed to H.R. 2642. The Statement of Administration Policy released by the Office of Management and Budget notes the Administration has had inadequate time to fully review the text of the 608 page bill, but states it’s apparent the bill doesn’t contain sufficient commodity and crop insurance reforms and doesn’t invest in renewable energy.

According to the statement, legislation as important as the farm bill should be constructed in a comprehensive approach that helps strengthen all aspects of the nation. Also noted is the failure to reauthorize nutrition programs. The Administration believes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a cornerstone of the nation’s food assistance safety net and should not be left behind as the rest of the farm bill advances. The President’s senior advisors would recommend he veto this bill should it come to his desk.
