When Sharon Greer’s mother baked, she had one rule. Greer says, “If you don’t eat what’s on the table you got to fix it yourself.”

While Kim Sacker’s mother, taught her other things. Sacker says, “My mom never baked.”

Baking for more than fifty years, Greer’s apple pies are famous. Sacker’s never baked a pie in her life.

Despite their differences, they’re teaming up with other volunteers to bake 300 pies for RAGBRAI. Marketing intern for the city of Van Meter Rachel Tendall says, “It’s an American tradition. I mean a lot of other towns are doing rhubarb, strawberry those are very popular, but apple pie is the number two seller. I mean you can’t beat apple pie with ice cream on a hot day. It’s great. “

Using Greer’s special recipe, profits from the pies will go towards the town’s veteran’s reception center. Volunteers rinse, core, and slice more than 2100 apples. Working the assembly line, Sacker gets plenty of practice putting together pies. Sacker says, “You know I might try it now. I think yes. I think I might.”

And with enough practice Greer says baking becomes as easy as pie.
