Water was pouring over a Des Moines road Sunday night after police say a drunk driver hit a fire hydrant.

The driver crashed into the hydrant around 7:00 p.m. on Southeast 14th and Hartford.

Officers say 33-year-old Matthew Konrad walked in to a restaurant after the crash. Witnesses say people eating at the restaurant did not let him leave until police arrived.

Konrad faces several charges including OWI, failure to have a valid license, and failure to maintain control.

Paramedics took Konrad and his passenger to the hospital for treatment. Konrad is now being held in the Polk County Jail.

Crews shut off the water and kept one lane open as they cleaned up the road.
