Crews in Winneshiek County are still searching for the body of a man believed to have drowned in the Upper Iowa River in Decorah.

KWWL reports officials are looking for 29-year-old Eric Langland, who was swimming with a friend near the Upper Dam Saturday night. The friend says he saw Langland struggling in the water and then was pulled under by water coming off of the dam around 7:00 p.m. Saturday.

The friend called 911 and crews worked until 11:00 p.m. trying to rescue Langland. They continued searching Sunday morning but still have not located his body.

Officials say the area around the dam is not safe to swim in and even rescue crews are having difficulty.

“We’ve deemed the area dangerous for our personnel because of the conditions of the water coming off the old dam,” says Decorah Fire Chief Mike Ashbacher. “We just believe right now that it’s a dangerous situation for our personnel to be in.”

Crews from the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, the Decorah Fire Department, Winneshiek County Ambulance, the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are assisting in the search.
