A former Iowa lawmaker is hoping to serve Iowa again, but this time from Washington, D.C.

Democrat Swati Dandekar has officially announced her bid for the 1st Congressional District seat being vacated by Bruce Braley.

Dandekar has served in Iowa’s House and Senate and recently resigned her position on the Iowa Utilities Board to clear the way for a congressional run.

“We must keep this seat in Democratic hands and continue the strong presentation established by Congressman Bruce Braley. I have a strong record of putting good public policy above politics and I will work tirelessly for the citizens of the District, just as I have in each public position I have held in the past,” Dandekar said in a statement released Tuesday.

Dandekar came to Iowa in 1973 from her homeland of India. She is a naturalized American citizen.
