Lt. Joe Gonzalez

A Des Moines police officer who was seriously injured in an accident earlier this month has been transferred to a Minnesota hospital after suffering another setback to his recovery.

Lt. Joe Gonzalez was providing security at the World Food Prize building in downtown Des Moines on July 13th when he was pinned between a truck and a wall. Gonzalez broke 13 ribs and both of his lungs collapsed.

Earlier this week, Gonzalez developed pneumonia and was also being treated for internal bleeding.

He has now been transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for further treatment.

A fund has been set up to help pay the travel expenses of Gonzalez’ family, so they are able to visit him. Donations can be made at the Des Moines Police Officer’s Credit Union at 423 E. Court Avenue in Des Moines.
