Glad to see Des Moines East make it to state for the first time in 15 years. There is no one East would rather beat to get there than Valley. We’ve received emails and tweets from fans of both sides complaining about the behavior of the other. That’s when you know emotions run high. …

Ankeny, Dallas Center-Grimes, Johnston, and Martensdale St Marys send baseball and softball teams to state. That’s a good summer. What other central Iowa schools pulled off the double? …

Kirk Ferentz is the dean of Big Ten coaches by seven years. Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald is now second. Seems like just a few days ago Fitzgerald was the new kid on the block. ….

Ferentz learned from Bill Belichick, among others, so Ferentz doesn’t say much at his media day news conference in Chicago. He did say the Big Ten’s eventual move to a 9-game conference schedule should not impact the Cy-Hawk series. Ferentz says he thinks Iowa will play Iowa State for a long time. Good. That game is important to our state, and the people in it, for many reasons. ….

Braves pitcher Tim Hudson suffered a gruesome ankle injury while covering first base Wednesday night. It’s really bad. It will make you squirm. I realize warning someone in this fashion is like posting a sign that reads, “WET PAINT. DO NOT TOUCH.” And you touch it.

Ouch. (And if you didn’t watch, good for you.) …

USA advances to the Gold Cup final. If you know what the Gold Cup is, you’re excited. If you don’t, it won’t matter to you. (It’s soccer.) …

It’s reported LeBron James is likely done playing for Team USA. Wish he’d continue, but he helped win a gold, and it is a grind for someone who plays all the way through the finals. Hope LeBron changes his mind, but won’t criticize if he doesn’t. …

When asked who is the best player in the NBA, Derrick Rose answered, “Derrick Rose”. Not when Derrick Rose doesn’t play. …

NFL stars Devin Hester and Chris Johnson will race a cheetah. Of course I’ll watch. My money is on the cheetah. …

cheetahDan Winters says a part-zebra, part-donkey should be named Debra. Didn’t get it during our 10 PM news. Get it now. If I didn’t have a childhood friend who spells her name Deborah, I could have been quicker. Maybe. …

Debra… Is that you?

My wife works as a volunteer at AHeinz 57 Pet Rescue. That means she brings dogs home to foster until they’re adopted. It helps avoid overcrowding. Well, overcrowding at AHeinz 57. It leads to overcrowding at our house, but hey, Jenny’s heart’s in the right place. We have two permanent resident dogs, and that’s enough. Threes a crowd:

This is all a big wind-up to adopting Tina. She’s been with us for three weeks, and still no taker. She’s a pug/cavalier king charles mix. She’s housebroken, and about a year old. She’s very sweet, especially to girls and women.

Tina

If you know anyone interested in Tina,  please go to www.aheinz57.com and fill out an adoption application.  She is listed as Tenille on the website. Now you know why we call her Tina. Her brother is, The Captain. Not kidding. …

Happy Birthday Karl Malone. Upon being drafted, the Mailman delivered one of Andy’s all-time favorite quotes, “I’m so happy to be playing in the great city of Utah.”

And props to President George H.W. Bush. He shaved his head in support of the son of one of the President’s security men. The 2-year old boy has leukemia. …
