MURPHY’S LAW: Gold Cup Gold, ‘Thanks Baby Mahan,’ Blueberry cake donut

By: John Sears

The US soccer team won the Gold Cup on Sunday, beating Panama 1-nil.  That’s 11 straight wins for Team USA and their first Gold Cup title in 6 years.  People who don’t like soccer could care less, I get it.  But, I really like watching USA soccer.  I played soccer for about 10 years growing up, I understand it.  You won’t catch me in front of the TV watching a Euro league match, but if Team USA is on I like it.

Do you remember this goal in the 2010 World Cup.  Awesome.

Hunter Mahan was leading the Canadian Open after 2 rounds when his wife went in to labor.  Mahan left the golf tournament, giving up a lot of $$$$ and a possible win.  Good for him.  He got to see his daughter being born, that’s a moment you CANNOT miss.  Brandt Snedeker went on to win the tournament and had a great quote.
“Zoe (Mahan baby) will be getting a very nice baby gift from me,” Snedeker said. “I can’t thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don’t know if I’d be sitting here if she hadn’t.”

clowney hitThe new rules to college football say the JaDeveon Clowney hit on Michigan RB Vincent Smith would be illegal.  Stupid.  Absolutely stupid.  In fact the new rules go as far as saying Clowney could be thrown out of the game for that hit.  I understand they want to protect ‘blows to the head.’  But give me a break.  That is as good of a hit as you’ll ever see.  It’s football.

The Iowa Barnstormers lost their final game of the season 84-45.  No that is not a typo.  Stormers finish 6-12.  Not good.  It’s the 4th straight year they’ve missed out on the playoffs.  More concerning than the lack of wins is the attendance.  I don’t know the actual numbers, but every game I went to they seemed to be lacking fans.  I hope the Stormers stick around, but I have to think there are concerns.

Congrats to all the Ragbrai riders who made it.  Ragbrai is something I’ve never aspired to do, and I have to imagine it isn’t easy.

Billy Cundiff has signed to play with his 12th NFL team.  And I thought I moved a lot when I was younger…

Have you had the blueberry cake donut from Dunkin’ Donuts?  If not I highly recommend it.  It’s essentially a blueberry muffin, in donut form, smothered in glaze.  I’m hungry.
