GRAIN BIN: Collapse Injures Worker
An accident at a Story County grain bin sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries Tuesday.
Crews were called to the Heartland Co-op in Slater around 6 p.m. on reports a man was trapped.
Twenty-three-year old Segoviano Israel Rodriguez was trapped inside a grain bin that was under construction after an accident left the man pinned inside.
Rescuers say the Storm Lake native was standing on scaffolding when it shifted trapping him against the side of the bin.
Rodriguez’s co-workers rushed to help and used a crane to lift the heavy scaffolding.
Slater EMS deputy chief Holly Lovig says it was a difficult situation getting the man out without causing further injuries.
“He was on top of some scaffolding at the top of the grain bin and the scaffolding gave way and actually crushed the man in between some metal and the scaffolding. When we arrived on scene we extricated him rapidly which was unique due to the position he was.”
Rodriguez was taken by Mercy One to the hospital, with what EMS workers say is severe neck and back injuries.
As of Wednesday morning, Rodriquez was listed in serious condition.
