An Iowa war hero is being honored in his hometown of Cedar Falls.

Work began Monday to transform the roof of the AMVETS Post 49 in Cedar Falls into a 3D American flag painting.

The project is a tribute to all veterans, but artist Scott LoBaido also had one particular veteran in mind when he came up with the project.

Navy EOD technician Taylor Morris lost portions of all four limbs in an explosion in Afghanistan in May of 2012. He’s now learning to walk again with prosthetics.

LoBaido wanted to thank Morris for the gift of his freedom. “Thank you dude! Thank you! Thank you for my gift and this is for you in exchange,” said LoBaido.

Plans are also proceeding to build Morris a state-of-the-art “smart home” that can be controlled by an iPad.
