Des Moines police are investigating an alleged case of road rage that ended with an assault and a smashed windshield.

A police report says the victim was at the intersection of South Union and Army Post Road Monday night when the incident began. The drivers of two vehicles in front of him were talking to each other and didn’t move when the traffic light turned green.

The victim yelled, “Let’s go” out of his window and the vehicles started moving northbound on South Union. At the intersection with Wautrous Avenue one of the vehicles, a red Astro van, stopped in front of him and reversed the van – hitting the victim’s car.

The other vehicle pulled alongside the driver’s side of the victim’s car. Both of the drivers got out of their cars and one of them jabbed the victim in the face with a metal pipe. The other man punched the victim in the face.

One of the men then used the metal pipe to smash the windshield of the victim’s car. The two men got back in their vehicles and left the scene.

Police say the victim was able to give them a license plate from the van but it did not match descriptions of the Astro van.

The victim suffered cuts to his lips but refused medical attention.
