A veteran Des Moines police officer who was injured earlier this month is showing improvements following surgery last week.
Lt. Joe Gonzalez underwent surgery August 25th to stabilize broken bones, helping him to breathe easier. He broke 13 ribs when a truck pinned him against a wall during an off-duty job on July 13th.
Police say Gonzalez continues to show slow improvement. He’s receiving treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
He was transferred there after suffering some health setbacks like pneumonia and internal bleeding.
