Des Moines city leaders hope a new paint job will make a busy eastside street safer.
This weekend a stretch of Hubbell Avenue was re-painted to add bike lanes.
It’s a 1.7 mile stretch between Easton and East 33rd Street.
Neighbors were opposed to adding the lanes but the city council put them in anyway on a trial basis.
They say they’ll cut down on speeding and accidents.
One cyclist we spoke to says the change is long overdue.
“This hill is a beast and trying to go up with two lanes of traffic and people passing you going 40-45mph, it’s not safe,” says cyclist Matthew Peirce.
Similar lanes were added on a trial basis on Ingersoll Avenue, too.
Those lanes are now permanent.
